Prabowo Responds to 17+8 Demands: Forming an Independent Investigation Team to Probe Affan's Death Makes Sense
JAKARTA – President Prabowo Subianto has responded positively to the 17+8 demands voiced during demonstrations that have turned violent across several regions in Indonesia. One of the demands highlighted was the formation of an independent investigative team to investigate the death of Affan Kurniawan, an online motorcycle taxi driver who died during the protests.
Prabowo specifically stated that the proposal to form an independent investigative team to investigate the deaths of Affan and other victims was a sensible step.
"Yes, I think an independent investigative team makes sense. I think it's reasonable. I think it can be discussed, and we'll see what form it takes," Prabowo said in a statement received on Monday (September 8, 2025).
Prabowo said that of all the aspirations expressed by the public, some were considered reasonable, while others still needed to be debated.
"We'll study it, some of it makes sense, some of it we can discuss, some we can debate. I think a lot of it makes sense. I think a lot of it is normative and we can discuss it well," he said.
However, Prabowo admitted that he was still considering several proposals, one of which was regarding the withdrawal of the TNI from civilian security.
"If we withdraw the TNI from civilian security, you are the one who will judge whether this makes sense or not, right?" he explained.
